Work is due to start on a £500,000 project to create a long-awaited state-of-the art centre for blind people in Chorley.
The current Galloway's centre on Crown Street will be renovated and extended to the adjoining property, which the charity recently bought.

It will include meeting rooms, a digital recording studio for the Talking Newspaper, an audio library and IT room as well as a drop-in centre.

The centre has stood empty since March this year but Galloway's organisers say that work is due to start in the next three to four weeks.

But there is still a £170,000 shortfall and the charity is appealing for donations and support for its buy-a-brick campaign.

Christine Crankshaw, Galloway's manager for Chorley, said: "There are around 750 partially-sighted and blind people in Chorley and the new premises will enable us to provide better facilities for everyone.

"The new centre will act as a base for Galloway's volunteers and staff and we will have a permanent display of specialist equipment to assist people with low vision."

This week Chorley MP Lindsay Hoyle was given a tour of the planned new facilities.

Development plans for a similar site in Water Street, Chorley, in 2007 fell through at the last minute because the site was sold to a higher bidder.

A Galloway's bookshop to raise more funds is opening on Eaves Lane, Chorley on November 1.
