Dance band plans reunion
Flashback readers are being urged to help a group of musicians find a former band member.
The Old Ionians Dance Band was a 16-piece group from the 1950s and members are hoping to get together for a reunion.
The band was started by pupils at Bolton School and developed into a 16-piece ensemble which played for teenage dances at Bolton Parish Church.
Now, members of the band are trying to track down Peter Smith who lived in Chorley and attended the school in the 1950s.
He played saxophone and clarinet with the band.
Another band member, Ken Mather of Bolton, said the band was trying to organise a reunion 50 years on.
He said: "A reunion of some of the original seven members of the band took place last summer and now around 12 have been found in places as far flung as Devon, Cheltenham, Reading and Doncaster.
"Only three members are known to have died. The remaining players have been trying to re-group with the intention of playing for people who used to attend their dances, with the receipts going to a development fund to finance needy potential pupils at Bolton School.
"The group began at Bolton School and grew to a 16-piece ensemble – latterly containing one or two members who were not from the school."
Mr Mather added: "Peter lived in Rotherwick Avenue in Chorley and was last known to be working in financial services or banking and had an elder brother called Roy."
If Peter still lives in the Chorley area, or if anyone knows of his whereabouts, they should contact the Flashback desk on 01257 264911 and we will forward any details to Mr Mather.
