Protesters will know today, Wednesday, whether their long campaign against a planned landfill site on their doorsteps has been successful.
Lancashire County Council's development control committee meets today, Wednesday, to determine an application by waste firm Biffa to open a second landfill site off Bolton Road, Abbey Village.

The Biffa Action Group, which has been fighting the proposals, presented their case to bosses at county hall in Preston on Friday in the hope of stopping the scheme.

Councillors have received 350 letters of objection and visited the site on Monday.

Concerns have been raised over dirty roads, obnoxious smells and litter being blown around the village.

Les Borland, spokesman for the Biffa Action group, said: "Friday went very well. I feel we got the point across very well.

"About 15 Lancashire County councillors visited on Monday and I think they understood the strength of feeling against the proposal."

Biffa wants to quarry the site for shale for two years and then fill in the hole created with non-hazardous waste over six years, restoring the land to a mix of farmland and woodland.

A spokesman for Biffa declined to comment ahead of the planning meeting.
