Chris Maguire decided to impress his mother-in-law this week by going gastro

If the idea of ’buy one, get one free’ dinners and processed food straight out of the microwave appeals then The Railway @ Euxton definitely isn’t for you.

The Railway is a ‘gastro pub’ and has forged a reputation for ‘real food’ under the leadership of charismatic owner Paul Rogers.

Paul clocked up his fourth anniversary in charge of the eatery between Chorley and Leyland in May and to say it’s undergone a transformation since 2007 would be an understatement.

He’s overseen a major change of image of the Wigan Road venue from a men’s drinking pub to an up-market eatery.

His strategy has been built around offering quality food with an emphasis on Lancashire produce.

As a result, The Railway has proved popular with up-market professionals, families and couples.

Special offers appear on A-boards outside The Railway on a virtual daily board but what drives Paul is the food.

There’s a real emphasis on local produce and the venue has won stacks of awards.

With this in mind I suggested it to Mrs M when her parents were over (and we had a huge gaping hole in the Guardian where the restaurant review is meant to be!)

The Railway has a very stylish feel to it as you walk in.

It is always clean and there’s disabled access and a baby changing room.

It’s the sort of versatile place where couples can enjoy a romantic meal; families can fill up; and workers can enjoy a drink and a bite to eat after work and all be happy.

The Maguire family - and Mrs M’s parents - are nothing but traditionalists and we all ordered the Sunday roast as part of a two-course special for £13.95.

Mrs M, my father-in-law and myself all went for the beef while my mother-in-law opted to be different by picking the lamb.

My two daughters had the kids’ roasts for £5 each.

There’s an old adage that size isn’t everything but that’s never really washed in my life.

When it comes to food I like it piled high and the more the merrier.

The Yorkshire pudding I got was massive but, and this is the downside, I only got two roast potatoes.

My late nan used to spoil me as a child and would put loads of roasties on my plate.

“You’re a growing lad,” she’d say before smothering them with gravy. That’s why I did my growing around my waist!

Gastro food is great but don’t skimp on the roasties.

Having side that the dinner was delicious. It was all beautifully arranged and tasted wonderful - as our empty plates proved.

The puddings were equally as nice. We all had the chocolate brownies (except for the mum-in-law who had ice cream) and you could taste the quality.

The Railway @ Euxton isn’t cheap but it’s not ridiculously expensive either.

A 250ml glass of Sauvignon Blanc cost £4.75 and a pint of guest ale was £3. It’s excellent food at competitive prices - even if would have like another potato or two!
