£922 power shocker

Gas and electricity prices have gone up a lot this year but not many people would expect to get a bill for more than £900.

However Alec Masters, from Charnock Richard, had to look twice when he was hit with a 922 bill from utilities supplier e.on.

The 76-year-old, of Church Lane, thought the company had sent the bill to the wrong customer as he lives on his own and had never paid more than 200 a year in the two years he has been an e.on customer.

He said: "This was the first of three bills they sent to me - I got two others for 640 and then another one for 659.

"I didn't pay the bill for the last quarter because I knew that something was wrong - I only put the gas on for an hour in the morning and for an hour at night.

"The last bill I got was backdated to 2006/07 and I was shocked that they seemed to be claiming I hadn't paid in all that time.

"I've always paid on time and I'm sure that something's not right."

The Consumer Champion sprung into action and managed to get Mr Masters' bill.

A spokesman for e.on said: "We'd like to apologise to Mr Masters for the distress caused by the gas bill, which was sent in error. As a goodwill gesture, we have cleared Mr Masters' current balance and have contacted him to confirm he is happy with the outcome."

The delighted pensioner said: "It's very good news and I'm happy that they've acknowledged their mistake. I don't know what would have happened otherwise, I'm on a state pension and there was no way I could have paid those bills."
