A Lancashire pub has scooped the top prize after winning a competition for its floral decorations.

A Preston pub has scooped the top prize after winning a competition for its floral decorations.

The Smiths Arms, in Lea, won Thwaites’s Pubs in Bloom competition, which celebrated the efforts made by licensees to make the outdoor area of their buildings look fantastic.

Tenant John Druce was delighted to walk away with £1,000 worth of beer for his pub.

The competition was open to all pubs in the Thwaites estate.

A winner was also chosen from each business area, with The Golden Lion, in Chorley, winning the area competition.

Pubs decked out their buildings and beer gardens with hanging baskets, floral displays, and colourful planters.

Andrew Buchanan, Thwaites director of pubs and brewing, said: “The idea is to make the outdoor areas of our pubs look fantastic and provide a warm welcome to people passing by.

“We had some superb entries with licensees really making their pubs stand out with some lovely flower arrangements - on the walls, in planters, in pots and even on the tables.

“They all looked fantastic and the standard was so high this year that it very difficult to choose a winner, so I’d like to thank them all.

“With the unpredictable nature of the British weather, it’s nice to see at least our pubs looking so summery.”
