Roll up! Roll up! The big countdown to Chorley Carnival is on and organisers are calling on members of the community to join their grand parade and competitions.
The three-day event, which will run over June 7, 8 and 9, is just eight weeks away and the committee behind the plans is now calling on residents to get involved.
They have already lined up a fun fair, carnival parade, main arena, firework show, bonny baby competition, crowning of the carnival royalty and an It’s a Knockout competition, and now they are looking for acts to take part in their Chorley’s Got Talent competition.
“Everything is in place,” vice chair of the committee, Nicky Pickering said. “What we really need now though is for people to start getting involved.
“We have organised the parade which was always the main attraction of the old carnival and we have got bands, dancers and floats, but it’d be great for more people to join in.
“Community groups are welcome to take part and businesses too. The procession will start from Botany Bay and head towards Eaves Lane, then Lyons Lane, George Street and up Market Street to the carnival at Astley Park on the Saturday.
“We also need acts for Chorley’s Got Talent – anything from singers to dancers or the more unusual and we desperately need teams to take part in It’s a Knockout. It costs £300 for a team of 10 so £30 each.”
The committee believes up to 15,000 people will visit the event and they have also arranged trade stalls and visits from the emergency services and Territorial Army.
“There hasn’t been a carnival for 20 years,” Nicky added.
“It was always the highlight of the year in Chorley and we want to bring that community spirit back. All of the money raised will be split between three charities – Home-Start, Cash for Kids and Macmillan Nurses.”
Organisers are also looking for sponsors and have thanked owner of Botany Bay, Tim Knowles for a substantial donation and PQ Print for providing leaflets. Committee chairman Karren McCarthy added: “We want to get as many people involved as possible as it’s all about the community.”
