Defiant villagers have rolled up their sleeves and pulled on their gardening gloves ready to flood Croston in colour for this year’s Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom UK Finals.

The army of volunteers from Croston in Bloom are ‘absolutely delighted’ to be representing the region in large village category of the competition after being awarded the silver gilt two years ago.

Chairwoman of the bloom group Anne Peet said the green-fingered team are ready to come back bigger and better this year after the floods which battered the village on Boxing Day 2015.

She said: “It is absolutely amazing - we will be better prepared this time as we know a bit more about what to expect.

“We’ve hit the ground running and have already started on the preparations.”

The bloomers have been given an extra boost this year after the Croston Flood Relief fund donated £1,500 to their coffers, with part of the funds put towards a raised bed celebrating the community clear-up efforts after the floods.

Anne added: “The raised bed will be dedicated to the villagers in recognition of huge community spirit and the efforts made by people in the clean-up and a permanent reminder.

“We are getting together to share people’s ideas and exactly how we want to look.”

Other bloom projects include a new green house which the team are hoping to use to grow their own produce and create a new focal point for the village.

They will also be launchng a ‘front door challenge’ with everyone in the village encouraged to get involved.

“A lot of the work we did last year was the clearing up, we put in a lot of hard work and now we’re ready to start from scratch in a way.”

The committee will be hosting a public meeting at the Croston Old School on March 9 at 7.30pm for anyone interested in this year’s competition and to come and share their ideas.
