A budding florist has been handed a prestigious award after just one year in business.
Budz by Helen Jane, run by husband and wife team Andy and Helen Brown, has won an Enterprise Vision Award (EVA) for the best small business.
The couple only took over the business on Church Street, Adlington, 12 months ago and also have a mention in the Good Florist Guide under their belts.
Helen, 44, gave up her 22-year career in HR to pursue her dream of working for herself. She used skills taught by her mum, who was also a florist, while husband Andy, 51, takes care of the finances.
Helen said: “I grew up in a florist household so the skills were always there. A year ago me and my husband both had life-changing things going on and we had to do a life check. I wasn’t happy in work and my husband’s business wasn’t exactly thriving, so we had to think about what we could do. The opportunity came up for this florist and is was too good to miss.
“It hasn’t been easy but we are getting a lot of satisfaction out of the time and effort we plough in.”
Once nominated Helen had to take to Twitter and Facebook to drum up support and get votes.
She said: “Social media is such a massive part of the business these days. It’s just another form of word-of-mouth.”
The awards ceremony was held at Ribby Hall on Friday.
Helen said: “It was like the BAFTAs! I didn’t go in with any expectations so when they called my name out I was completely shocked. I was shaking as I was calling people after to tell them the news.
“This has been such a fantastic time. I still can’t believe it.”
