The rain might be bad news for most people but Sky and Richard McCann just can’t get enough of it.
The husband-and-wife team run Buckshaw Village-based Welly Warehouse, who sell a range of wellies costing £10 to £320.
After trading exclusively online they’ve just launched their first shop and say they couldn’t be busier.
Sky, a mother-of-two, said: “People from all walks of life are wearing wellies. If you’re outside you need a pair of wellies.”
The pair launched their first business Out of the City in 2004 selling country clothes.
Sky said: “We found that a lot of customers were buying wellies so we decided to diversify into that.
“We were selling online but we were getting requests from people wanting to try them on in person so we decided to open up a shop.
“It’s booming. At Christmas and Valentine’s Day we get a lot of orders for red wellies and for Mother’s Day people want gardening wellies.
“Kate Moss was the one who really brought them back into fashion. She wore black Hunters and hot pants to Glastonbury and looked amazing.
“You can get high heeled boots now. They’re obviously not designed for walking through a muddy field in but it shows how in fashion boots are now.”
Welly Warehouse employs 18 people and the wellies come in all sorts of designs and colours.
“We start with the Dunlop rubber wellies for £9.99 and go to the £320 leather wellies with goretex lining,” he said.
“The cheaper wellies are basically made out of synthetic rubber but the Hunter welly, which is the biggest brand we sell by far, is a lot more comfortable and has a fitted sole.”
Sky says she’s always been the outdoor type and used to work at the family run gun shop ‘Bamfords’ in Eccleston.
SKY now hopes to expand the company.
