Charity fundraiser has recipe for success

Tasty treats sold like the proverbial hot cakes as sweet lovers handed over their cash to help wounded soldiers.

Sharon-Ann Riley baked 660 cakes and sold them on a stall on the Flat Iron car park, in Chorley town centre, on Saturday.

Cakes lovers could choose from a wide range of fairy cakes, cupcakes, chocolate cornflake cakes, coconut cakes, fruit cakes, almond cakes and more.

Sharon-Ann, of Brooke Street, Chorley, planned to sell the cakes all day on Saturday.

But her first customer arrived as she was setting up at 8.20am and the cakes proved to be so popular that she sold out by 1.30pm.

She said: “I was so chuffed. It was phenomenal.”

Sharon-Ann, 52, held the cake sale to raise money for Help For Heroes, a charity supporting injured soldiers and their families.

Her husband and father used to be in the Army and several other relatives have also served in the armed forces.

She said: “I have made just short of £600. I’m really pleased.

“We are a forces family and I think the work the charity does is phenomenal.

“The soldiers that come back have got such horrendous, life-changing injuries and I wanted to do something for them.”

Sharon-Ann has raised money for charity before, including through sponsored walks and swims, but wanted to use her culinary skills to help this time.

She works as a chef at Buckshaw Retirement Village and has her own website, The Baking Lady, with recipes and video tutorials.

Her fundraiser was part of Help For Heroes’ Colossal Cake Sale initiative, which will see events being held around the country in the next few weeks to support the charity.

And Sharon-Ann was so pleased with the success of her cake sale that she is already planning a bigger and better event next year.

She said: “I will definitely do it again at the same time next year with a lot more cakes.

“I will be looking at doing 1,000 cakes next year.”
