Charnock Richard scarecrow festival - in pictures

The wet weather failed to dampen the spirits of Charnock Richard as hundreds of people poured in for the annual scarecrow festival.

The event began on Friday and reached its climax on Sunday evening.

Despite early bad weather the sun popped out for the second half of the weekend and organiser Margaret Stewart was thrilled with the results.

She said: "There was a real carnival atmosphere, so many people gathered for the parade and exhibitions around the village. "There was even congestion because of the numbers of people arriving, it really was an amazing spectacle."

Highlights of the event included 'Last Night of the Proms', by Pemberton Old Wigan JJB band, performances from St Michael's High School steel band and Charnock Richard brass band.

There was even a version of 'Charnock's Got Talent' in which the village's budding stars showed off their star potential.

But the highpoint of the weekend was undoubtedly the sea of themed scarecrows that took over the village.

Margaret said: "There was everything from Ice Age-themed scarecrows to a Cruella De Vil lookalike. People really do take it seriously, some will already be planning their designs for next year."

Locals gathered for a prize draw to raise funds for The Community Centre Trust on Sunday evening to round off a wonderful weekend.
