Dad speaks of relief after nine-year battle
A dad from Chorley has been paid more than £3,000 in child support money after winning a long-standing battle with a government agency.
Peter Wilkinson's fight with the Child Support Agency lasted nine years and now the 51-year-old dad-of-two has spoken of his relief after a reassessment of payments found that he had paid 3,196 too much in relation to one of his daughters, who is now grown-up.
The payments date back to 1998 and debt collection fees inflated the amount he allegedly owed to more than 12,000 at the height of his ordeal.
He then took his case to court but without success because he had thrown out a letter with crucial information that could have been used as evidence.
Mr Wilkinson, of Black Horse Road, Chorley, now wants to warn other single dads who may find themselves in a similar position.
He said: "I am so happy that this is finally over because it's been a very long and painful procedure to get to this point.
"It was a horrible experience and I feel drained. My advice is to keep on fighting and not let government departments grind you down."
The CSA is responsible for administering child maintenance payments and handling child support disputes between parents and legal guardians.
A spokesman for the Child Support Agency, which is part of the Department for Work and Pensions, said: "Whilst we cannot comment in detail on individual cases, I can confirm that the agency is currently looking into issues raised by Mr Wilkinson and will be contacting him to discuss and resolve the matter."
