Since September 2011, the students and staff at Worden Sports College in Leyland have been wowing everyone by raising the bar and achieving new heights.

Worden was recognised for all its hard work and achievement in raising standards in education by being awarded Convertor Academy status by the Department for Education, and will be the first school in Leyland to be part of the Government’s flagship academy initiative.

Worden was visited by Lorraine Fullbrook, MP for South Ribble, who had nothing but sheer admiration for the work of the staff and students, and reflected this in her weekly column in the Leyland Guardian.

Worden was also nominated for the LEP Secondary School of the Year and received ‘Highly Commended’ status at the LEP Education
Awards.

Lots of changes have taken place over the last few years, as the new leadership team improve the education for Leyland students.

Headteacher Chris Catherall said: “Worden has been transformed by its new ethos of raising the bar and achieving new heights, Worden pupils wear their uniform with pride, and are proud of the fact they do many wonderful things in the local community”.

Worden students have achieved the UNICEF Rights Respecting School commitment mark, and are committed to upholding the values that go along with this.

In addition, Worden has worked with local businesses to host an enterprise day for year 10 students, as well as supporting the clean-up your local area campaign.

In the year when London hosted the Olympics to inspire a generation through Sport, Worden has been awarded the Gold Mark standard that recognizes its achievements in the delivery and enhancement of the sports and PE curriculum.

Worden is the only school in the local area to have achieved this Gold status.

Finally, Worden’s academic prowess has gone from strength to strength, with students achieving year on year their best results ever.

In 2010 the students achieved 79% 5A* to C and 48% including English & Maths. In 2011, the students achieved 85% 5A* to C and 57% including English & Maths (both above national average)

2012 is set to be GCSE Gold for Worden students as they smash all previous records and achieve results that are set to be well above national averages and make them the greatest school year ever in the history of the school.

Chairman of Governors Maureen Woodall said: “In 2012, students at Worden will be the best in the country as they reap the rewards of all their hard work, which has resulted in achievement being significantly above national average with 100% of students gaining 5A* to C grades and 36% achieving 3 or more A*/A grades”
