“The lake District is a very special place for us; it’s where we go to properly be together, where we can share in our passion for the outdoors, walking and good pubs.”

Chorley couple Jillian Salvin and Matthew Cross met at Runshaw College in Leyland and got engaged in Tuscany, Italy, but knew that there was only one place for them to get married; Cumbria.

Matthew, owner of Adlington-based ‘Hatch Architecture’, first spotted Jillian, a learning mentor at Myerscough College, when she was involved in a fashion catwalk event at college.

“Jillian was studying at Runshaw and I had friends there that were friendly with her,” he explains. “I was invited to an event where Jillian was part of a catwalk show modelling some student designs.

“This was the first time I saw Jillian but it was five years until I saw her again; we then spent several years as friends before becoming a couple.”

The proposal took place in the summer of 2013 in a tiny village call Pienza in Tuscany.

“We then met two retired Scottish couples in a bar who bought us copious amounts of celebratory whiskey; the next day we very happily went on our Florence trip despite the hangovers!”

Matthew, from Adlington, describes: “I’d initially intended on proposing to Jillian on our anniversary day which was while we were away, and we’d arranged a day trip out to Florence.

“However I soon realised that Tuscany was such a beautiful and special place that I should just carry the ring around with me until I knew the time was perfect.

“I ended up proposing the evening before our anniversary sat on the wall surround Pienza looking out over the Tuscany Hills.

And whiskey played a part at the end of their wedding day too, surrounded by family and close friends.

Matthew and Jillian, from Wheelton, tied the knot at Broadoaks Country House in Windermere on November 6, saying their vows in front of a view looking out over the lakes, with guests watching on and a wood fire burning in the background.

“We knew from the start that we wanted somewhere that felt very homely, where we could bring together everyone important to us to share in our celebrations,” Matthew says.

“To carry on the intimate theme we had the wedding breakfast on one large rectangular table so everyone could be together.

“The table decoration itself was designed by Jillian and it really did take everyone’s breath away; including a table runner made up of hundreds of doilies, collected by several family members over two years then individually stitched together by Jillian.”

He adds: “We chose to have a juke box for the evening music so our guests could dictate the playlist.

“We concluded the evening sat drinking whiskey with family and friends before everyone retired to their rooms for the night.”

The newlyweds enjoyed a short break after the wedding in Poolewe in Wester Ross, the Scottish Highlands, and are planning to return to Italy for their honeymoon.
