He has been described as the 'people's gardener' and Matthew Biggs certainly entertained the green-fingered folks of Chorley.

Matthew is the well known TV presenter from Channel 4's 'Garden Club', Meridian's 'Grass Roots' and BBC Radio 4's 'Gardeners Question Time'.

He was in town last week to present the prestigious Royal Horticultural Society 'Growing for Success' Lecture at Chorley Town Hall.

Around 160 members and guests of the Chorley and District Gardening Society, along with Chorley Mayor Coun Iris Smith, gathered in the Lancastrian Suite to hear from the garden expert.

He spoke about the treasures to be found in the back gardens of Britain and what lessons can be learned from the owners' passions for plant collecting, vegetable growing and garden design.

The Chorley and District Garden Society chairman Philip Rees said: ''The society is currently celebrating 125 years of existence, starting off in 1884 with a small group meeting in the Red Lion.

"We are equally proud to join for this lecture, one of 20 around the UK, with the Royal Horticultural Society."
