Children as young as 14 have been captured on CCTV trying to steal a car in the early hours of the morning.

Now police are urging parents to make sure they know where their children are at that time of day.

The shock discovery was made on Doris Street, Chorley, on February 19.

Police said a group of six youths – aged between 14 and 16 – were seen trying to break into the vehicle between 1am and 2am.

Sgt Kevin Mountain, of Chorley’s neighbourhood police team, said: “CCTV shows they are young.

“They look to be getting into the car and starting it up. We would appeal that if anybody has any information in relation to this, to contact PC 3935 Debs Collier.”

He added: “We would also stress the message to parents - do you know where your children are between 1am and 2am?”

Ward councillor Adrian Lowe, executive member for places, which takes in community safety, backed the police message to parents.

“It’s certainly something we would share,” he said.

“In terms of safety, there has to be a responsibility just to be aware of where your kids are.

“It would reduce the potential problems that occur and reduce the difficulties that families could get into. We fully support the message.”
