Sight loss charity Galloway’s Society for the Blind has launched the EyeCan Awards – a first for Lancashire – celebrating the achievements and inspiration of visually impaired people.

They aim to celebrate what visually impaired people living locally can achieve with the right encouragement, opportunities and support.

“These awards aim to recognise those who go the extra mile to support local visually impaired people and celebrate those living with sight loss that inspire others around them and don’t view their sight as a barrier.”

Emma Russ, Galloway’s senior fund-raiser, said: “We see daily examples of courage and perseverance from amazing people of all ages to overcome the devastation that sight loss can bring.

“Thanks to our main sponsor, Eric Wright Group, we’ve been able to create these fantastic new awards, which aim to recognise those who go the extra mile to support local visually impaired people and celebrate those living with sight loss that inspire others around them and don’t view their sight as a barrier.”

Galloway’s is now encouraging people to nominate individuals in one of the 10 categories; young person, volunteer, sports person, artistic talent, charity champion, business, education, community, carer, and an overall most inspirational person award.

The awards are open to people from any background and a link with Galloway’s is not necessary.

Eric Wright, chairman of Eric Wright Group, said: “Galloway’s does some outstanding work for people living in the county and we’ve had a strong relationship with the team for many years, with the company attending our Water Park Lakeland Adventure Centre in Coniston each year with a group of blind and partially sighted individuals.

“We’re proud to give something back to this amazing organisation and look forward to honouring some inspirational people on the night.”

The ceremony will take place on Friday, November 13 at the Invincibles Lounge at Preston North End.

The guest speaker for the evening is Preston’s own Steve Daley, 18-year captain of the England Futsal Team.

Nominations can be submitted at www.galloways.org.uk/eyecan-awards-2015 or by emailing eyecan@galloways.org.uk.

All nominations must be received by 5pm on Monday, October 8, and all nominees will be acknowledged.
