Kath resolves missing bin saga

An Adlington businesswoman turned detective when her wheelie bin went missing.

Kath Fisher, owner of The Butty Shop, in Market Street, was left scratching her head when somebody made off with one of her commercial rubbish bins.

At first the shopkeeper suspected thieves had taken it until she realised her general waste bin had been replaced with a container for paper-only.

She immediately rang waste collection firm Veolia, who charge her more than 100 a month to collect her rubbish, but they said they hadn't taken it.

However, the shopkeeper wasn't convinced and when they threatened to charge her for a new bin she contacted the Guardian.

Now the firm has admitted that one of their crews took the bin by mistake and they have replaced it without charge.

Kath, who has run the shop for 14 years, said: "I'm just glad the bin is back because we rely on it. You can't run a food business without a bin.

"I knew something funny was going on all along. A normal thief wouldn't steal it and then replace it with a different kind of bin - it just doesn't make sense.

"I rang everyone but nobody wanted to admit they took it."

The incident took place last Wednesday at around 9am when Mrs Fisher heard a loud racket coming from the rear of her shop where she keeps the large industrial wheelie bins.

When she went out to investigate she found one of the 660 litre general waste bins had been taken and replaced with large recycling bin.

The Champ was more than happy to help when the firm denied taking the bin and threatened to charge the businesswoman for a replacement.

After numerous efforts to speak to someone, a spokesman finally confirmed that the mix up happened when one of their departments took the bin by mistake.

They have since replaced it without charge.
