Letters to the editor, October 14

Our loyal readers give us their views on the hot topics in Chorley and Leyland.

Give us some Space, Asda

Dear editor, Asda say that they are committed to a multi-million pound investment in Chorley.

In the same edition of your paper (October 7), a Chorley mum has launched a campaign to build a much-needed new facility for children, young people and adults with disabilities that will enhance their quality of life.

She says that this new Space Centre will cost about 3m.

So, how about it Asda?

It would be wonderful if these two ideas could be combined on the same site.

This would bring much-needed support and enjoyment for many local people as well as making good business sense for Asda who would benefit from the extra custom and goodwill.

Stop talking noncensus

Dear editor, Last year I sent you a photograph of the road signs produced by Lancashire County Council advertising 'Business's Open As Usual'.

This time they have surpassed themselves.

In the Central Lancashire Travel Census delivered to every home in Central Lancashire this week, they state on page one: "We also want to know why you are have made each trip."

Not content with wasting taxpayers' money, they can't even waste it in correct English.

Thanks to police

Dear editor, I would just like to sing the praises of our local police and PCSOs.

From November 2008 until May 2009 we had to call on them many times.

Our calls for help were met with a lot of understanding. We can't thank them enough.

If it's too good to scrap...

Dear editor, I'd like to comment on the recent stories about people being prosecuted for taking junk from rubbish tips, such as the Sita Waste Disposal centre in Leyland.

I agree it's stealing if the waste area is closed. Then you are trespassing as well.

But if it's open to the public to dispose of their unwanted effects, I don't see the problem of picking up the odd item, which is often placed at the top of the steps by the previous owner because it is too good to scrap.

I have helped myself in the past not knowing it was regarded as stealing.

Volunteering- give it a try

Dear editor, if your readers would like to find out more about volunteering, then why not pop along to the Leyland office of the Council for Voluntary Service at 78 Towngate any Thursday morning between 9.30am and noon?

Refreshments will be available and an extensive range of volunteering opportunities will be on view.

Each month has a particular theme and the focus for November is volunteering with the homeless and other hard to reach groups.

General information on other opportunities is also available.

The drop-in is also open to existing volunteers who would like to call in.

For more information, readers can contact me on 01257 263254 or on email at gael.finch@chorleyandsouthribblecvs.co.uk

Poppy Appeal needs help

Dear editor, The Royal British Legion in Chorley is urgently seeking volunteers to help with the Poppy Appeal in the town.

In particular they are looking for volunteers to help collect at Morrisons, Tesco, Booths and within the Poppy Shop during the appeal, which will this year run from October 24 to November 11.

The Poppy Appeal is the Legion's principal way of collecting the welfare funds that are used to provide financial, social and emotional support to the serving and ex-service community.

If you can help for a minimum of two hours during the appeal, then the organisers would love to hear from you.

I'm the regional fundraiser for Lancashire and The Royal British Legion is dedicated to serving those who serve.

Our annual Poppy Appeal is an essential component that allows us to fund the delivery of our Poppy Support to those who need our help most.

I believe we have the potential, with the support of the local community in Chorley, to make this year's Poppy Appeal, the nation's most beloved appeal, the most successful to date, as long as volunteers step forward.

If you want to be a part of the most successful Poppy Appeal ever, we need to hear from you now, so that we can ensure the appeal runs with military precision when it begins later this month.

Contacts us on 07795 426629 or email us at stinsley@britishlegion.org.uk
