Drivers should turn the wheel

Dear editor, as an Eaves Green resident, every day whilst driving home, especially at the roundabout at the end of Myles Standish Way, I find it very, very, very frustrating and ignorant of other drivers who continually go in a straight line at the roundabout.

It causes myself and other residents to brake hard to avoid contact with lazy drivers who seem to find it difficult to turn that circular thing in front of them called a steering wheel.

Every day this is a regular occurrence and the amount of near-misses I have encountered myself is phenomenal.

Drivers seem to find it difficult to approach the roundabout and turn the steering wheel to allow enough space for another car, when they would just prefer to straight line the roundabout and cut everybody up.

When you sound your horn at the lazy drivers you are usually confronted by V-signs and abuse as they seem to think they have done nothing wrong.

One day a bad accident will happen at this roundabout due to ignorance and laziness.

I would suggest that Lancashire County Council invests in some white paint and marks out the correct lanes for this roundabout.

Travellers need to earn respect

Dear editor, I was shocked and very disappointed by the letter about the travelling community in Hut Lane, Heath Charnock, (Guardian, September 16) and especially the author's cheek in aligning it to the persecution in World War Two.

Many millions died to prevent a band of thugs dictating their will on the rest of the world.

If these people want 'respect' they should start by earning it and it is not achieved by bringing misery to the community they choose to invade.

Thank you for reunion

Dear editor, I would like to express my thanks to the Chorley Guardian for the part played in reuniting my brother Gordon and I.

Until I heard about your original story in the paper that prompted the reunion from an old schoolmate, I was under the impression that my brother had died several years ago.

I was indeed shocked to hear that he was in a wheelchair, but very relieved to see him still alive.

Without your story, I would never have thought about checking the Chorley area for him. Thanks again.

200,000 of savings

Dear editor, Adlington Labour activist Paul Walmsley's letter (Guardian, September 16), in a desperate attempt to divert attention from this failing government, wrongly claimed that top manager salaries at Chorley Council have increased.

Savings of more than 200,000 have been delivered in the last three years by reducing the number of directors.

In addition, 1.9m of savings have been stripped out by reducing bureaucracy and this has been put into frontline services.

Under the previous Labour control, auditors rated the council 'fair', narrowly avoiding the 'weak' category by one point.

They said there was a clear lack of leadership and no communication with the public.

Despite this poor performance under Labour, council tax increased massively every year.

Now Chorley, under the Conservatives, is rated as 'excellent' and is described as one of the best councils in the country by government auditors.

As well as improving local services, we have cut costs and kept council tax increases low and we intend to continue this.

Care and compassion

Dear editor, Through your letters page, I would like to thank the schoolgirl who went to my wife's assistance when she fell in Eaves Green Road last Wednesday afternoon.

Also the gentleman who kindly brought her home and the doctors and nurses in the accident and emergency department at Chorley Hospital for their compassion whilst treating her broken arm.

Thanks for coverage

Dear editor, White Coppice Cricket Club wishes to thank your newspaper for the extensive coverage of match reports that you have given during the 2009 cricket season for all the clubs within the Chorley borough.

It has certainly increased the profile of our club and hopefully helped to increase spectators, sponsors and members if we have a better summer in 2010.

The Chorley Guardian is now an excellent publication from front page to back page.

Keep up the good work.

Andre's magical

Dear editor, I want to share with you all a DVD.

I wish Andr Rieu's concerts could be seen by more people.

The entertainment is magical, often funny, the soloists are first-class, ladies all in colourful evening gowns and music uplifting and jolly.

It's a different kind of concert. I have tried to buy them in the shops or rent them from the library – nobody has heard of him! How can this be?
