Little Scotland, Blackrod
It's a few years since I visited Gallagher's in Little Scotland, Blackrod. The last time was as a DJ at a silver wedding.
As a result, I had to get out the sat nav and tap in the postcode, but it couldn't be easier to find.
Just outside Adlington on the lower road, turning right and then right again into Little Scotland.
It's a lovely name for a road and apparently there are two reasons why it was given that name. The first was that Baron Haigh of Wigan named it after his place of birth and the second was that at the end of the 19th century, the area housed many Scottish migrant railway workers.
Either way, you need transport to get there.
The pub has recently been taken over but the restaurant is still a special part of the business and thankfully hasn't been given the 'ball park' makeover.
The wooden floors give the restaurant a lovely atmosphere. I like that in a place. The piped music is good too ( the sort of music I play on my BBC Radio Lancashire show on Saturday night). The menus are clean and smart (had to get that in!), so everything is looking good.
The waitress took our drinks order and the prices weren't excessive for a restaurant.
The a la carte menu is extensive and there is a specials board as well as a three-course option (12.95 Monday to Thursday and 14.95 Friday and Saturday).
Carole opted for the three-course option, starting with salmon and prawns fish cake on dill mash finished with parsley cream, whilst I selected the garlic bread with tomato and chilli (2.50).
The speed of service was not quick, but we had come to relax and when the food arrived it looked good and tasted even better.
For the main course Carole selected chicken cacciatore (chicken breast cooked with onion, peppers, garlic, white wine, tomato and bacon) whilst I went for rump of lamb (prime rump cooked with rosemary, served on garlic and herbed potatoes, finished with port jus 14.95).
Posh choice for me? Yes, and they didn't bat an eyelid when I asked for some mint sauce.
Lamb has to have mint sauce in my book and Gallagher's delivered. A side order of chunky chips completed my order and we had dishes of new potatoes and fresh vegetables to share.
I raised the white flag after the main course, but Carole selected chocolate cheesecake as a dessert and whilst she said it was gorgeous, she too had reached eating capacity after a couple of mouthfuls.
There were only two staff on duty in the restaurant on the evening we visited and it was sad to see that it was operating well under capacity.
Gallagher's has been a restaurant of note for many years and I can thoroughly recommend that readers pay a visit. You won't, I am sure, be disappointed.
Yes Gallagher's is alive and well and a hidden gem.
It's clean, the food prices are very reasonable, as are the drinks and it's a yes vote from Mr and Mrs Swanton for a return visit in the near future.
