A charity fund-raiser battled the gruelling heats of the Caribbean to raise money in memory of her mother.

Gina Dalton, 35, formally of Eccleston, cycled across Cuba raising money for a number of cancer charities.

Gina was part of a 100-person strong team who took on the 400km course.

She managed to raise £3,500

The event was personal to Gina who was participating after her mother Kathleen died from breast cancer 25 years ago.

The group battled extreme weather including torrential rain and 37 degree heat, but managed to complete the cycle in five days, averaging 80km a day.

Gina said: “This was undoubtedly the toughest thing I have ever done, but the sense of achievement I felt when I finished was overwhelming and I know my mum would have been really proud.

“It was an amazing challenge from start to finish. I experienced cycling in quite gruelling temperatures and conditions, but I met some extremely inspirational women along the way, many of whom were doing the challenge after recovering from cancer themselves.”

Gina, who was only 10 when her mother died, had barely been on a bike until she signed up for the challenge.

She added: “I’m thrilled to have raised so much money for three fantastic charities and I’d like to say a massive thank you to all my friends and family who have sponsored me and supported me along the way. I just hope the money I’ve raised will go some way towards ensuring that one day in the future other families will be saved from losing loved ones.”
