Arrest after night on the tiles
Two teenagers were arrested after claims that they had tried to steal lead from the roof of a Chorley pub while customers were inside drinking.
The Brooke Arms in Eaves Lane was closed for the best part of 12 months until Joanne and Mike Mee took over last year.
They got the shock of their liveslast Wednesday when they heard footsteps overhead and thought an intruder was in the first-floor flat.
However when they went to investigate they say they found a number of people on the roof - despite the fact that regulars were still inside drinking.
Joanne, 46, said: "What I couldn't understand was why they'd done it when we were still open."
Husband Mike, 43, said: "It was just before midnight. I was returning from KFC and was talking to one of the regulars outside. There were a few customers finishing off their drinks and my wife said she could hear footsteps overhead.
"We've got a flat upstairs so I thought maybe we had an intruder but when we investigated there was nobody there.
"Then we heard footsteps again and realised they were coming from the flat roof extension."
It was then that the couple's heroic 21-year-old son Dean leapt into action and challenged the intruders.
Mike said: "They jumped about 9ft from the roof and ran through the car park and down Eaves Lane.
"I saw the lead stacked up on the roof and my wife phoned the police."
Mike praised their son and another local lad who also joined in the chase. "I'm very proud of Dean," said Mr Mee.
"He'll always try and protect his family. I should also like to thank the police for their quick response."
He said the lead that was stacked up has now been removed by the police as part of their investigation.
A police spokesman said: "We were alerted to an incident at the Brookes Arms at around 11.50pm on September 1.
"Following a foot pursuit by officers and police dogs, two teenagers were arrested.
"An 18-year-old was later release with a police caution, while a 16-year-old, arrested on suspicion of theft and burglary in a dwelling, was released on bail until October pending further inquiries."
