A schoolboy’s Christmas joy was soured when a thief stole the new bike he had received as a present from his mum and dad.

Paperboy Dominic South, 15, of The Brambles, Coppull was about to start his round when he discovered the theft – only three days after Christmas Day.

The teenager was inside the newsagent’s shop on Spendmore Lane, Coppull, when the thief struck.

He received the shock of his life when, on leaving, he noticed that the bike, which he had left outside the shop, was missing.

“I walked out and there was no bike,” said Dominic, who attends Southlands High School in Chorley. “I was only in the shop for 10minutes.”

He immediately phoned the police.

Dominic, who has been delivering papers for a year, was really looking forward to getting round on his new bike.

His old one was four years old and getting a bit worn out.

He said the incident had not spoiled his Christmas, but had put “a big downer on it”.

He said: “It’s a bit rubbish, really. They’re pretty low, a bit despicable, really.”

The bike, a £400 specialised Hardrock mountain bike, had been bought by his parents, Fiona South, 49, and her husband Clive, 52 from Buy a Bike, Preston Road, Charnock Richard.

It had 24 gears and was in the colours of Dominic’s beloved Wigan Warriors rugby league team.

Mum Fiona, who works in the local taxation section at Chorley Council, said; “It happened on the Saturday after Christmas at about 7.15am.

“He was inside the newsagents and had just got going to do his paper round.
