Blaze's cause still a mystery

A CORONER described the death of a woman in a blaze which shocked a village as "a terrible tragedy".

After her inquest, mystery still surrounds the cause of the fire which killed Julie Danson as she slept.

Fire investigators were unable to establish how it started after finding no electrical or gas faults and no signs of foul play at Mrs Danson's Pilling home.

The 42-year-old woman, who had problems with her heart, was believed to have liked to light candles.

One theory is a candle was left burning, sparking the fire.

But no candles were found in the devastated wreckage of Mrs Danson's terraced house on Lancaster Road and Coroner Simon Jones said that was "purely supposition," delivering a verdict of accidental death.

He told her family: "This is a terrible tragedy. I am very sorry for your loss."

Mrs Danson, who was divorced and lived alone with her dog, was asleep when fire broke out on October 21, last year. She was found in the kitchen of the house with a quilt still under her arms.

Her body, which was badly burnt and had to be identified using dental records, had fallen from the bedroom into the kitchen after the floor of the upstairs room collapsed as flames ravaged the building.

The cause of Mrs Danson's death was recorded as smoke inhalation her pet labrador also died.

Det Insp Brent Jackson, from Lancashire Police, said an investigation into Mrs Danson's death had found no evidence of foul play.
