Chorley chippie cleared after test
A fish and chip shop that claims to be the healthiest in Chorley found itself at the centre of a probe by Trading Standards.
J-Seas opened in Harpers Lane, Chorley, last November and claims to be different to its rivals because it doesn't use dripping or palm oil.
Instead they use a blend of mono-saturated lighter frying oils that have virtually no cholesterol. However the shop's claims were put to the test when J-Seas found themselves being investigated by Lancashire County Council's Trading Standards department.
Officers came in and took away a portion of fish and chips to be analysed.
Owner Jonathan Cartwright, 47, who used to be a chef at a five star hotel, said he was shocked by the visit but insisted they had nothing to hide.
"Before we opened the chippy we spent six months doing research," he said.
"We know that the oils we use are healthier. There's virtually no cholesterol.
"It's better for you because it doesn't get deposited in your veins. It costs us more money but we don't pass it on to our customers."
Rachel Wilcock, lead officer for metrology and food at Lancashire County Council's Trading Standards Service, said analysis confirmed J-Seas had the lowest fat content of the five tested.
