Chorley's Market Street to re-open?

They said it would kill trade in Chorley.

Now, 11 years after traders protested the closure of Market Street with a mock funeral, Chorley Council is considering plans to finally reverse the decision in a bid to bolster trade.

When the main road was closed off more than a decade ago, wreaths were laid in the streets by business leaders amid fears it would decimate trade by deterring shoppers from coming into the town.

Traders have been fighting the scheme ever since and now the authority has agreed to look at new proposals to remove the gates at either end of Market Street. Today's business leaders believe the move could give shopkeepers a 'fighting chance' if plans for a new multi-million pound Asda superstore are given the green light.

Malcolm Allen, owner of Malcolm's Musicland and chair of Chorley Traders Alliance, said: "The closure of Market Street all those years ago has caused damage to the town's trade just as the businesses predicted.

"It has accelerated the decline in the town's main street and several members of the alliance wanted to see if it could be re-opened in light of the new Asda application. It is a suggestion we have asked the council to consider."
