Chorley firefighter fell in front of train

The man who fell in front of a train in Chorley is a serving firefighter, it has emerged.

The victim, who has not been named, had to be dragged to safety by shocked passengers at Chorley Railway Station.

The 36-year-old from Euxton was rushed to Royal Preston Hospital after suffering devastating injuries, especially to his feet.

It has now emerged the man is a serving Lancashire fireman, although he is not believed to be based in Chorley.

A spokesman for Lancashire Fire Service said: "We are supporting our colleague at a time like this but beyond that I really can't comment."

The injured fireman, who is still in hospital, is being comforted by his wife who declined to comment.

The football fan, who had watched Liverpool play Manchester City last month a few hours before the drama, was found on the tracks after being run over by the train.

Two police officers from Chorley were called to the scene.

Sgt Azz Khan said: "A train hit him and he sustained severe injuries to his lower legs.

He was dragged off the tracks by two members of the public."

A spokesman for British Transport Police said the incident was being treated as an accident.

He said: "The train had come into the station and gone again and the driver had not spotted the man. Members of the public managed to get him back on to the platform.

"They realised how serious his injuries were and called for an ambulance and the police."

His injuries are not lifethreatening.
