Chorley 'Garden-grab' plans delayed
A decision on plans for another 'garden-grabbing' scheme in Chorley has been delayed.
Plans to build seven detached homes and associated infrastructure on the affluent Shaw Hill development in Whittle-le-Woods were recommended for approval ahead of last week's planning meeting at the Town Hall.
However, after a storm of protest from angry residents, delayed a decision so they could visit the site.
Now, residents in the area believe the tide could be turning in their favour as they attempt to stop the plans.
Bill Highton, whose Shaw Hill home overlooks the site, has written numerous letters, including one to Conservative party leader David Cameron, campaigning against the plans.
He said: "I couldn't believe it when the committee said they were delaying the decision.
"Until now there was never any indication that it would not be approved. I am heartened by the fact that it now seems as though our opinions are at least being taken into account. I can't ask for anything more than that."
A total of 16 letters of objection were submitted to the council ahead of the planning meeting last Tuesday. They raised concerns about traffic problems, excess noise and disturbance for existing residents and overdevelopment of the semi-rural neighbourhood.
Developers Wainhomes built seven homes just 35 yards away at The Spinney in 2007, angering local residents.
They also have a number of other developments ongoing in nearby Preston Road and in neighbouring Clayton-le-Woods.
Local leaders fear increased development is having a negative impact on local amenities.
Coun Alan Cullens, who has fought against garden developments in his Clayton-le-Woods ward, said: "There has been far too much development in the area in recent years but there have been no additional amenities provided and we can't keep up."
Wainhomes have a policy of not commenting on ongoing planning applications.
A decision is now expected to be made at the next development control committee meeting in April.
