Chorley shopkeeper threatened by gunman

A man burst into a Chorley newsagents and threatened a shopkeeper with a handgun in a terrifying attempted armed robbery.

The incident happened at the News and Books store in Eaves Lane, at around 5.25pm on Monday.

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said a man dressed in dark clothing went into the store with the black handgun and ordered the shopkeeper to open the till.

He refused and the man ran out of the shop empty handed.

Police believe he met up with a second man before fleeing the area.

A police spokesman said: "There were no customers in the store at the time of the offence.

"The shopkeeper, who is male, is very badly shaken but uninjured.

"It is obviously unclear at this stage whether the weapon was real or an imitation firearm.

"A full search has been made of the area and an investigation is under way."

Any witnesses or anyone with information is urged to contact police on 08451 253545.
