Chorley to get more allotments
Chorley Council has pledged to double the amount of allotments to tackle a chronic shortage in the town.
Interest in owning an allotment has soared in recent years and at last count five people a week were being added to a five-year waiting list.
Now, after demands from residents, the council has announced it is investing 40,000 over the next 12 months to create an extra 150 sites.
Coun Eric Bell, Chorley Council's executive member for neighbourhoods, said: "Due to the popularity of gardening shows, healthy living and the need to be more environmentally friendly we've seen the demand for allotments grow considerably in the last few years.
"Although we have 147 allotments in Chorley we realise this is not enough and we are actively seeking land to increase the number of plots available.
"We now have three or four sites in mind across the borough, which will create more than 150 allotments."
According to Coun Bell, who has his own allotments, the activity provides users with opportunity to grow their own fruit and vegetables, meet new people and get plenty of exercise.
"The community growing schemes are great because it means anyone who wants to get involved can do whether it's digging, planting, weeding or watering," said Coun Bell.
"At the moment we can't go into specific detail about the locations of the proposed allotments because we've still got consult with people and get planning permission.
"We hope to have that sorted in the next couple of months and then we will be able to start offering allotments to people on the waiting list."
