Retweeting a link to a petition protesting the closure, he wrote: “This can’t happen! Chorley’s a big town, it absolutely needs an A&E department. Lives are at risk. Please sign + RT.”

He added: “And lives will be put at risk. It might be you or someone you love.

“You’re in a RTA on the M61 j28.You’re bleeding out. Would you want A&E 15 min away via M55 or 5 min away in Chorley?”

Richard Whitehead, owner of TWJ Parnership tax advisors, agreed, writing: “Can you imagine the pressure that’s going to land on Preston and Bolton A&E Depts? Already at breaking point.”

Spikey replied: “Total clueless idiots governing us.”
