When Matthew Bates struggled to find a romantic restaurant for his first Valentine’s Day with his girlfriend, he decided to go somewhere different.

The 39-year-old took the love of his life, Stacey Mellin, 24, to McDonald’s in Chorley instead.

He took along a Valentine-themed table cloth, plates, napkins, confetti and even a candle to bring some romance to the fast-food restaurant.

It was also a birthday celebration for Matthew, of Vine Street, Chorley.

He said: “Everywhere was booked up so we decided to go to McDonald’s.

“And she thought it was awesome.”

Stacey, of Northgate Drive, and Matthew caused quite a stir as they tucked into their hamburgers and fries.

They caught the attention of youths in the building and McDonald’s staff even took photographs of them.

And the couple were given free

McFlurry ice creams to help celebrate the occasion.

Matthew said: “It was definitely a memorable Valentine’s Day.

“It was more fun than going to a restaurant.”

And the unusual choice of venue for the Valentine’s meal could become something of a tradition for the couple.

Matthew, who works for Leyland Trucks, said: “I have no idea what we will do next year – maybe KFC!”
