D-Day arrives for Buckshaw Village plans

D-day has finally arrived for the final piece of the Buckshaw Village jigsaw.

Planners today look set to rubberstamp plans for 1,000 homes on the Group One site of the development.

Ancient woodland and important ecosystems would also be opened up to the public for the first time in decades.

Remediation works would also be carried out to make the land safe before building commences.

Landowner BAE Systems has applied for outline planning permission to build up to 1,168 dwellings for the site.

The firm also wants to turn over 19,500 square metres for business use and create a new road access to the A49 Wigan Road.

South Ribble Council has recommended the application for approval subject to almost 50 conditions.

Cash will also be provided for public open space, improvements to transport in the village and a community development officer.

Part of the site will also be reserved for a future primary school.

Planning officer Mike Eastham said: "This site will form the final phase of the Buckshaw Village development and will assist in creating a sustainable urban village in accordance with the original concept."

BAE plans to sell the land on once planning permission is granted.

Coun Cliff Hughes, South Ribble's cabinet member for planning, said: "The significance is that someone has come forward to continue with the development.

"There is a sense that people are looking with interest at this part of the world.

"Getting planning permission is one thing, but making it happen is another."

The Royal Ordnance Factory occupied much of the site for more than 60 years until it closed in 2007.

A decision will be made by South Ribble Council's planning committee today.

Chorley Council will also have to give the development the go-ahead before building work can start.
