AN urgent call has been made to help stop speeding on a Chorley road.

County Coun Kim Snape is calling on Lancashire Police and Lancashire County Council to stop the speeding problem on Rawlinson Lane, Heath Charnock.

Rawlinson Lane has a 20mph speed limit but Coun Snape claims drivers are constantly exceeding this.

Coun Snape said: “I’m not having a go at anybody but it would be good to have the two working together.

“I agree with the 20mph schemes but we need to do more than just stickers - perhaps some rumble strips could be put down to help alert the cars.”

LCC has been to Rawlinson Lane and conducted road traffic surveys.

Paul Binks, road and transport safety manager, said: “We’re aware of concerns about speeding on Rawlinson Lane, and have placed interactive ‘smiley face’ signs on the road on six occasions since August 2012.

“We’ve assisted Coun Snape to communicate with residents and drivers who use the road by distributing marketing materials such as car and wheelie bin stickers.

“We are currently discussing the issue with the police to look at further options to support the 20mph speed limit.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “Road safety is a key priority for Lancashire Police and we will always strive to listen to concerns from the local community.

“Unfortunately, the number of parked cars and the narrowness of the road are currently preventing the RoadWatch Scheme from being carried out at this particular location.

“However, the road layout will be changed and improved over the next few months as a result of work being carried out by Network Rail, and this may allow the scheme to be carried out in the future.

“SPIDS, or smiley faces as they’re known, have been used at this location and will continue to be used as they have proved to be an effective speed deterrent across the county.”
