End of era for nursery

The end of an era is fast approaching for a Chorley school which has waited more than 60 years for a permanent home.

Duke Street Nursery School, which dates back to 1941, is due to be demolished in the coming weeks as they prepare to move into their new purpose-built home across the school yard.

To celebrate the move, school officials are asking former pupils to go back to their old classrooms to take part in a farewell celebration next month.

Elaine Dennard, school clerk, is hoping former pupils can find some old photos and share memories to create a nostalgic display at the party.

She said: "We want as many people as possible to come out of the woodwork to give the school the send off it deserves."

"Who knows, we might even discover that a few famous faces went here - you never know.

"What we need is for people to come forward with old pictures and stories. It will be fantastic but we need peoples support. to make it a success."

The farewell party takes place at the school on November 6.

Two weeks later, on November 17, they move into state-of-the-art Duke Street Children's Centre, which was officially opened by Chorley boxer Michael Jennings last month.

The existing nursery building was built at the height of WWII and was only supposed to be a temporary measure. However, more than 60 years later they are only just getting permanent premises.

Elaine said: "We have already started to pack up and it will certainly be sad when the bulldozers move in next month. We are leaving behind lots of fond memories of this place.

"On the other hand, it is a very exciting time for us with the move to the new children's centre. Hopefully our new building will bring us as many great memories."

Duke Street Children's Centre joins a network of more than 60 children's centres across Lancashire, providing services including early education and childcare, child and family health services, antenatal advice for pregnant women, support for fathers, drop-in sessions and other activities for children, help with job hunting and information on all aspects of bringing up a family.

The school, which has around 80 pupils, will continue to operate as an independent nursery provider.
