FA Cup brings Chorley girl to national prominence

A CHORLEY-born soccer club boss reflected on what might have been after her team went out of the FA Cup at the weekend.
Glamorous Carolyn Radford, 29, chief executive of Mansfield Town, could not hide her disappointment after her teams, non-league Mansfield, lost 2-1 at home to Premier League Liverpool in a televised FA Cup third round tie on Sunday.
But all the talk after the match was about Liverpool’s Luis Suarez’s blatant handball which led to the striker being accused of “cheating” - and meant Mansfield missed out on a lucrative replay.
Mrs Radford, whose maiden name is Still, was born and grew up in Chorley.
She said after the match: “It feels a bit like the result was stolen from us.
“Whether it was deliberate or not, it should be sorted out.
“It is very unfortunate that the referees and officials can’t pick up these things.
“We should be at least having a replay. Handballs are obviously de rigueur.”
Mrs Radford is married to the club’s wealthy chairman John Radford.
The attractive blonde became the youngest ever chief executive of a football club after her husband took over the running of Mansfield Town in 2010.
She attracted the attention of the national media in the run up to the Liverpool game.
Her aunt, Shirley Cowling, who runs Stills Decorators on Pall Mall, Chorley, said: “She’s my niece. They got married in May and we went down to the wedding. He’s got a big hall down there.
“The wedding was in a marquee. It was a big, lavish affair with musicians.
“We don’t know how she met him, the next thing she’s getting married.
“She keeps in touch with my brother obviously, but I don’t see her much.”
Carolyn’s father is Anthony Still, and Shirley said the family used to live in Burgh Meadows, Chorley.
She said: “She went working away and before that she had been to university.”
Mrs Radford is obviously very passionate about her Mansfield role.
She was arrested at 9pm on Wednesday, May 2, last year in York for using threatening words and behaviour after an away match at York City’s Bootham Crescent Stadium.
She was detained by police and given an adult caution before being released. Her husband said the incident had been blown out of proportion.
