Two friends from a mountain biking club will complete a new cycling challenge when they take to a tandem for the very first time on Sunday

Joanne Pooley and Jolene Pemberton have signed up for the St Catherine’s Hospice Big Charity Bike Ride to set themselves more of a challenge by taking part together on a tandem.

They will complete the 20-mile circuit of the Preston Guild Wheel – one of two routes which make up the event, which also includes the option of a 50-mile ride through the Fylde and Wyre Valley.

They will also be joined by fellow club members Rachel Millar, Julie Wardale, Pauline Powell and Kelly Twiname.

Joanne, of Withnell, who took up biking two years ago on the suggestion of her husband who is a keen cyclist, said: “There’s a group of us from the area around Withnell, Abbey Village and Hoghton who make up a club called Abbey MTB.

“We’ve done the Guild Wheel a few times, so Jolene and I thought we’d up the challenge by doing it on a tandem instead.

“We literally rode one for the first time ever last week which has been a bit of a giggle - we only rode it up and down the lane and still nearly ended up in a hedge.

“Turning corners is the trickiest bit but we are getting some practice in and are sure it will be great fun on the day.”

Joanne added: “The most important thing is that we’ll turn a few heads and raise some money for such a well-deserving, local charity.”

Jolene, also a member of the club, said: “We were keen to do something a little bit different and when Joanne said she had a friend who could lend us a tandem for the occasion it seemed like the perfect opportunity.

“It’s completely different to anything I’ve ever ridden before – we’re going to be relying on good communication and co-ordination to get us around the circuit.

“The thought of raising money for St Catherine’s will spur us on I’m sure.”

Lynne Whittaker, senior fundraiser at St Catherine’s Hospice, Lostock Hall, urged people to come along and join in the fun family-friendly event, which is being kindly sponsored by Mini’s Play Centre.

“It’s not too late to be part of the Big Charity Bike Ride,” she said.

“Riders can still sign up that morning, and they’ll be plenty going on at Preston Grasshoppers where we’ve got a cycle show with stalls, stands, games and refreshments from midday - so you can bring the family down to cheer you back over the finish line!

“It’s going to be a fantastic day – raising much-needed funds to support the work of St Catherine’s Hospice.”

Riders are still welcome to sign up on the day for £40 for the Challenge Ride and £25 for the Fun Ride.
