Fury at Chorley village subway
Residents in a Chorley village are fighting shock new plans to reopen a troublesome subway which made their lives a 'living hell'.
People living close to the controversial underpass, at the junction of Spendmore Lane and Station Road, Coppull, claim they were plagued by gangs of youths binge drinking and taking drugs for years before it was finally shut four months ago.
However, they are now facing a new battle to keep it gated off after a resident applied to make it an official public right of way.
Roger Turner, of Spendmore Lane, claims the subway should never have been closed and has now contacted Lancashire County Council to start the process of having it reopened.
He said: "The subway has been a right of way for more than 100 years and it should have remained open."
Coppull councillor Coun Ken Ball said: "Three residents phoned me up in tears because of their fears about it being reopened.
"Six years ago we started the process of getting it closed off after hundreds of complaints about anti-social behaviour.
"We had a consultation period and only five residents disagreed with the plans to close it off.
"Since it was closed off four months ago we have had no reports from any residents.
"We will fight these new plans tooth and nail."
