Heavy rain sparks 'landslide' fear

Heavy rainfall is being blamed for problems with drainage in Buckshaw Village.

Excess surface water has collected in parts of the watercourse which runs throughout the development.

The build-up has led to fears from one local councillor that it could undermine the infrastructure of the site.

County and local ward councillor Mark Perks said the problem was particularly bad on the watercourse between Central Drive and Main Street.

He claimed: "The retaining wall is in danger of collapsing and the surrounding grassed area is very soft and moving.

"There is banking already broken up and moving about, the storm drainage pipes have no covering and there is underscoring of the opposite banking near to the apartment on Main Street."

Coun Perks said the problem was first reported to Barratt during the heavy rain this summer.

He added: "The situation is now becoming worse and residents are growing more concerned about the dangers to people, traffic and property this banking movement and erosion may cause."

A spokesman for at Barratt Manchester said: "The watercourse or 'Mill Race' running through Buckshaw Village carries surface water drainage from the development through to the outfall at Worden Brook in keeping with the Environment Agency's policy on sustainable drainage.

"Its construction has been jointly funded by Barratt and Redrow and the design was agreed by the planning authority.

"Last week we were made aware of problems with the timber walling along some sections of the Mill Race and have asked a structural engineer to investigate and produce a remedial design."

Coun Peter Malpas, Chorley Council's executive member for business, said: "We have contacted the developers who are responsible for maintaining the land and we will be working with them to resolve the problem.

"We have sent out a building inspector to ensure that there is no risk to public safety."
