Carnival fever is on its way to Chorley!

Work will begin at Astley Park on Wednesday to erect the arena and other things needed for the three-day spectacular this weekend.

Organisers believe there will be something for everyone at the popular event, which returned last year after a break of almost 20 years.

One of the highlights will be the traditional parade, which will feature around 1,400 people from 39 different businesses and organisations.

They include Chorley’s carnival royalty, along with royalty visiting from Adlington, Lostock Hall and Horwich.

There will be a rolling road block to halt traffic as the parade makes its way from Botany Bay at noon and heads to Astley Park, via Eaves Lane, Lyons Lane, George Street and Market Street.

The incoming Mayor of Chorley, Coun Roy Lees, will watch the parade from Chorley Town Hall before going to the park.

Paul Wilkins, carnival committee chairman, said: “We are really pleased with the size of the parade.

“It’s not all lorries, we have belly dancers walking and a samba band leading the way.

“There are towards 1,400 people in the actual parade. It’s quite a length.

“We are hoping everyone will follow the parade into the park.”

The carnival will start on Friday with fairground rides in the park and a 1970s party night featuring a performance by Eurovision Song Contest winners Brotherhood Of Man.

On Saturday, the parade will be followed by an array of activities at the park, including stunt shows, more than 30 stalls and the crowing of the carnival royalty.

In the evening, there will be a Chorley’s Got Talent competition at 6pm and live bands from 7pm. And the fun continues on Sunday with a fun dog show and baby show, both starting at 1pm, a dog display team, clowns and other attractions.

The celebrity guest will be actor Ayden Callaghan, who plays Joe Roscoe in Hollyoaks. He will meet fans and pose for photographs at 3pm.

Paul added: “We just really need the people to come down and support us.

“There is something for everybody over the weekend.”
