CYCLING hero Sir Bradley Wiggins is already king of the roads – and now it appears he’s king of the quips too.

Sir Bradley has already been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year for his heroic win in the gruelling Tour de France in 2012.

Now he will be adding another more unusual accolade to his trophy cabinet, after being named Britain’s Wittiest Celebrity by Freeview channel Dave.

Sir Bradley saw off competition from the likes of bumbling London Mayor Boris Johnson, who finished second, and scathing Apprentice guru Lord Sugar, to claim the title with 20 per cent of the vote in a poll of 2,000 viewers.

The affable dad-of-two, who lives in Eccleston, near Chorley, raised a laugh when he began his Tour-winning speech on Paris’s Champs-Élysées by quipping: “We’re just going to draw the raffle numbers now!”

Former Blackpool FC manager Ian Holloway also nudged into third place for his post-match banter with journalists. Comedians were excluded from the poll.

The top three wits have been invited to perform at the Dave Comedy Festival, which begins in Leicester tomorrow.

Steve North, general manager of Dave, said: “Britain is a hotbed of comedy and it’s clear you don’t have to be on the comedy payroll to get the nation laughing, as our top 10 of Britain’s greatest living wits
encompasses celebrities from diverse fields, including the worlds of sport, music, film and politics.

“Our winner, Sir Bradley Wiggins, has a special place in the nation’s heart which seems to be on account of his red-hot wit, as well as his sporting abilities.

“We have extended invitations to all those in the top three to appear at this year’s Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival and hope they will agree to appear.”
