Man jailed for 23 years for murdering wife

A man who killed his wife in a savage attack has been told he must serve at least 23 years after being convicted of her murder.

Stephen Green, 52, formally of East Beach, Lytham, killed 57-year-old Carole at her home address in East Beach, Lytham, on January 18, 2010.

Her former husband David Humpries, who has since remarried, now lives in Clayton-le-Woods.

Mr Humpries, 70, was married to Carole for 23 years before they divorced.

Officers found her body on her living room floor after they were called to her flat by a concerned colleague after she failed to attend work.

A Home Office post mortem examination revealed the cause of death as multiple stab wounds.

Green was arrested at the scene and was found to have self-inflicted injuries to his wrist.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Murphy from the Force Major Investigation Team said: "This is a tragic case where domestic violence has escalated to murder and our thoughts remain with Carole's family, who have been tragically and needlessly deprived of a loved one.

"They accepted Stephen into their life as Carole's husband and now he has taken her from them. It is apparent that when his relationship with Carole broke down, Green would not accept it and he eventually killed her coldly and callously, fuelled by alcohol."

The family of Carole Green said, "We, the family of Carole would like to thank Lancashire Constabulary, the CPS and the Prosecution Council for their support and professionalism in bringing Stephen Green to justice.

"The last six months have been extremely difficult following the devastating news of our mum's horrific murder. The support of our loved ones, friends and the kindness of strangers has been of great comfort to us all.

"Carole was a loving mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. She had many friends and will always be missed. It is our sincere hope that Carole will be remembered by those who knew her, not as victim but as the smiling, happy woman we knew her to be.

"Stephen Green uttered nothing but lies in his defence. He showed no remorse for his actions or concern for the truth. The details of the case revealed our mum died in the worst possible circumstances and we as a family we now have to come to terms with what Stephen Green has taken."

Mr Humpries remained in contact with his ex-wife through their children.

The couple had one child of their own - a son called Daniel - but Mr Humpries brought his ex-wife's other two children - Shellene and Kelvin - up as his own.

All three are now in their 30s and live out of the area.

In an interview earlier this year Mr Humpries said: "You could say I have moved on from that part of my life but we have children and Carole was their mother.

"She was much loved. In 23 years of marriage we never had an argument. I never raised my voice and we had many wonderful holidays together. She loved to travel."
