New fund to cut teen pregnancies
Thousands of pounds is being investing in a new project aimed at tackling teenage pregnancies in Chorley.
According to the Office of National Statistics the number of teenagers becoming pregnant in the town has fallen by more than 10 per cent in the past year - from 93 cases to just 72.
But rates are still much higher than national targets and Chorley Council's strategic partnership has invested almost 5,000 to fund a new nine-week programme aimed at teaching 13 and 14-year-old girls about the dangers of teen pregnancy.
Coun Pat Case, Chorley Council's executive member for policy and performance, said: "Recent figures show teenage pregnancies are falling across Chorley, which is excellent news.
"Initiatives such as the young mum's peer group and improved training for staff who work with young people to deliver sexual health education are all making a significant impact.
"We still have quite some way to go to meet our objective of significantly reducing teenage pregnancy but agencies are working together to educate young people about the harsh realities of becoming a teenage parent."
Although the figures show that teenage pregnancy rates have fallen year-on-year, little progress has been made over the past 10 years.
However, Chorley Council chiefs say things are moving in the right direction.
