Police are hunting a brazen thief who struck at a Chorley town centre pawnbroker’s.

The man entered The Goldmine and asked if he could have a look at a smartphone which was on display.

But when he was handed the Apple iPhone5 he immediately ran out of the shop with it.

A shop assistant gave chase but the thief got away.

Giulio Argentino, owner of business on Pall Mall, has released CCTV images of the man.

He said: “He came in and said can I have a look at that phone – we’re behind a security screen.

“As soon as I gave it to them they ran up Cunliffe Street and ran off. He knew what he was doing, he was ready to run.

“It wasn’t like he was toying with it.

“We’ve managed to get a good image on CCTV.”

The incident happened at about 1pm on Tuesday.

Mr Argentino added: “We opened about seven years ago. We’ve never, never in seven or eight years had anything like this happen before.”

Police confirmed they were looking for a man following the incident.

He is described as white, aged about 25, 5ft 9ins tall, with short hair and of slim build. He was wearing a round neck top and dark pants.

The phone is valued at around £300.
