Organisers have insisted that Adlington Carnival will go ahead this year - despite fears that it had been cancelled.

Railway Road in Adlington is being closed for four months from June 9 while the railway is electrified.

It means the carnival parade cannot follow its usual route, leading to concerns that the annual spectacle would be called off.

But the carnival committee is instead looking at other possible routes for the parade.

Alan Snape, treasurer, said: “We asked if it was possible to delay the closure for a month, but it isn’t because there is a lot involved.

“We are hoping we can get round it by finding an alternative route.

“We are definitely going ahead this year.”

The popular carnival will be held on Jubilee playing fields, on Park Road, from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 13. The parade is held on the Saturday.

Preparations are well underway and many acts have been booked, though the committee will not yet reveal the star to attend on the Sunday.

Last year, soap star brothers Ryan Thomas and Adam Thomas, who play Jason Grimshaw in Coronation Street and Adam Barton in Emmerdale, drew in the crowds.

The carnival excitement will start on Easter Sunday with a duck race on the canal alongside the playing fields.

It is a joint event for Adlington and Chorley carnivals and there will be duck races for each area, as well as a corporate race.

Emmerdale’s Joe-Warren Plant, who plays Jacob Gallagher, will officially start the races.

The event, which runs from noon to 5pm, also includes a fun fair, stalls, refreshments, a bar and an Easter egg hunt.

The selection for Adlington’s carnival royalty will be at 2pm on Sunday, April 27 at St Paul’s Church Club on Railway Road.
