Robbie all set to rock

POP superstar Robbie Williams is getting ready to flick the switch on Blackpool's 'best Illuminations weekend in years'.

The Take That singer leads a star-studded bill at tonight's Switch On party with guests Alesha Dixon, Russell Watson, Olly Murs and classical quartet Bond entertaining 15,000 lucky ticket holders.

Thousands more are expected to watch the event from a giant screen erected at St Chad's Headland.

Workers have spent the last two days putting up huge barriers around Central Car Park for the event.

Natalie Wyatt, head of visitBlackpool, said: "Excitement is certainly reaching fever pitch.

"We think it will be the biggest and best Switch On weekend for many years.

"Having Robbie to top off a week-long series of events is just the

icing on the cake."

This year's Illuminations have something of the Dark Ages about them.

With design guru Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen now a full-time consultant, sections of the Golden Mile will slowly transform into a haunting sequence of ghostly figures and scary scenes to attract teenagers – the sector missing from the usual crowds of visitors, according to Illuminations bosses.
