Shock homes plan for deadly road
A former mill on the outskirts of Chorley is to be replaced by 81 retirement apartments - sparking fears of traffic chaos.
Euxton Mill, off Dawbers' Lane, was previously occupied by Xelflex Precisions Moulders Ltd, which closed several years ago.
The road was the scene of an horrific accident in 2006, when friends Sean Stewart, 21, and John Marsden, 20, from Euxton, died when their car crashed at a bend close to the site entrance.
Now an application has been submitted to Chorley Council on behalf of the owners Xpect Development Limited for 81 flats and nine two-storey cottages.
The application has been filed by Neil Pike Architecture Limited.
Their spokesman Neil Pike said: "This is a careful and sensitively scheme for senior (citizen) living.
"We are excited about the proposal as it looks over the countryside and it will see the demolition of (an) ugly building that is there.
"There will not be any more traffic because of the development and this is a very dangerous stretch of road. However we are going to have full forward visibility in both directions to reduce the risk of accidents."
However the plans for the 19th century building have sent shockwaves through the community.
Chris Wallbank, 30, of neighbouring Old Dawbers Lane, said: "I am not happy about getting 81 apartments and I think the site is so small that the people will be living in a shoe box. I think it is too many for that site.
"Unless they are going to do something about access roads most of the residents will be against it."
Mr Wallbank said accidents were already weekly occurrences on the road.
"There are just too many cars speeding around the bend and wonder how many will have to die before something is done," he said.
Harry Messenger, 84, off Dawbers' Lane, said: "They will need to do something about access because it is a very dangerous road.
"It is very difficult to cross this road. A roundabout would be a good idea."
