Stock car lover Kevin goes out with a banger

STOCK car racing enthusiast Kevin Bentham was ‘karted’ out in the unconventional style he would have wished for this week.
The 57-year-old father of two, who lost his brave battle with cancer, was cremated in a red, yellow and blue ‘banger’ coffin.
Kevin, who’s first name was Roy, of Mawdesley, hated traditional funerals and the kart coffin would have been what he wanted, said his family.
The coffin was provided by Livesey’s undertakers who handled the funeral yesterday afternoon.
Kevin was cremated at Charnock Richard following a service there.
Born in Ulnes Walton, Kevin ran a building firm. He left school at 15 years old and started an apprenticeship in the building trade.
He started banger racing in 1976, his favourite track being Nelson. He won many trophies that have pride of place in his dining room and in 1980 he decided to move onto racing Brisca F1 Stock Cars.
He built two cars himself and during his five year racing career he achieved nine wins and 35 podium finishes. He stopped racing but later returned to the sport when his son Liam, 24, took it up.
He loved the sport so much that in the last two years he never missed one of the 115 meetings that Liam went to all over the country.
He regularly went karting and eventually set up and opening his own go-kart track at Euxton – Extreme Karting UK.
Kevin remained a builder until his illness and in the last two years he enjoyed having Liam working with him.
He married Diane in 1986. In a tribute to her husband, she said: “Kevin had no idea how many people cared about him.
“The number of people attending his funeral, the numerous expressions of sympathy, love and support received in the form of cards and messages of media websites have shown that he will be missed by many.
“All have said what a kind, gentle and generous man he was.”
His family said Kevin fought a brave battle with his illness and that they would like to thank St Catherine’s Hospice “for the excellent care they gave Kevin in the last days of his life”.
Kevin leaves Diane and Liam and a daughter Lauren, 20.
